Yoga Off The Mat

This month I’ve been considering the concept of SPACE.  I celebrate Lent and having been raised a “very serious Catholic”, I always gave up one thing for the 40 Days as a way to reflect on the season of Lent.  This spring, I gave up Instagram for 40 Days.  Want to know my 3 biggest takeaways?

  1. As I suspected, my phone’s weekly screen time plummet (by more than I realized!), I found new things to do when I needed to kill time (carpool line), and I gained some valuable minutes back in my day.  All of those things definitely happened.  I can’t believe how much I was clicking and scrolling when just walking around my home or getting ready for my day.  The result?  I feel calmer and more focused and my mornings are MUCH less rushed because I am not being drawn into a “quick check in” on Insta.

  2. That social media was taking up some very valuable brain space which I had not even noticed!   Turns out I was actually giving brain time to thinking about things I saw on social, always thinking of ways to promote my business on social, and even annoying my kids with silly photos so I could share them.  Even writing this now feels a bit embarrassing but here I am, being real for you about it because it has had such a great impact on me.  Giving up social media literally decluttered my brain space.

  3. You know the old, if a tree falls in a forest and no one hears it, did it fall?  Well, a LOT happened in 5 weeks!!  And I have to admit, I actually felt sad to not be able to share it with friends and family near and far by posting.  I missed knowing where friends were traveling and really missed saying Happy Birthday to many people because I didn’t see a post or a reminder (sorry, spring birthday friends!). In 5 weeks I traveled to fun places, had great family moments, kids hit records and milestones, studio events & classes were happening that I didn’t get to share, I celebrated a big anniversary of an ACC Championship with my college team….we even got a dog!  And none of this was shared.  My takeaway is that I am a deeply connected person.  I care about knowing and understanding what is happening with my family, friends, and community - and I want to be a part of it too.  For better or worse, my experience tells me I must have a happy, balanced medium of social media in my life - its the world in which we live, for now!

What’s next?  I’ll be back in the “insta world” on Easter Sunday. Maybe with a top 10 photos of Lent just to catch up anyone who cares on my family and my dog, whose name is Tater Tot.  The next is this - INTENTION.  No more sleepwalking social for this girl.  Can’t wait to see you all there.

Pose of the Month

Dancer Pose is a big heart-opener and balancing pose not to be missed!  To me, the “best kept secret” of Dancer is to keep reaching forward as much as you’re kicking back in your lifted leg, AND KEEP GOING until you feel a stretch in your standing leg.  I’m a big fan of multi-tasking in my yoga poses - in this one you’re working balance, opening your chest, shoulders, and hips, and if you keep pressing forward and down, you’ll get a big dynamic stretch of your hamstring in your standing leg.  The result is that you are stretching AND strengthening through a greater range of motion in that hamstring than if you were just static stretching or doing a strengthening exercise like a squat or leg curl.  Enjoy!
